     GCC 2.96 was never an official release. Its the version Red Hat
     shipped with Red Hat 7.x. Its a snapshot of beta development code.

     details are available at http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-2.96.html

     2.95.3 is more recent and an official release.

On line 27 we have

# if __GNUC__ != 2 || __GNUC_MINOR__ > 95

I'm currently using 2.96 and the ostream header is also missing. Should
this include guard be changed to:

# if __GNUC__ != 2 || __GNUC_MINOR__ > 96

Ciao,
Jeremy
