Based upon the evidence you presented, I concluded that your char
is equivalent to unsigned char. On what basis do you conclude
that your char is equivalent to signed char? Did you check
std::numeric_limits<char>::is_signed?

You misunderstood me. I was suggesting that a conversion from
std::numeric_limits<unsigned>::max() to int should cause an
exception.

Your analysis is what I was saying all along, except that the
lack of exception was, I thought, due to your char being
equivalent to unsigned char. (You do realize that char may be
signed or unsigned depending upon the system, right?)

Based upon what Fernando mentioned in another reply, it may well
be that the behavior you're observing is a bug.
