There is no reason to delay committing to trunk, even though the
deadline for merging major changes to branches/release is Monday. If
all goes well, and John is satisfied, then the changes can go in for
1.48.0. If issues come up then the changes shouldn't get merged to
branches/release until it opens for 1.49.0.
