It was not that I had a library with the '.a' extension, my libmpi is
defined as follows in my user-config.jam

lib libmpi : : <file>C:\\MPICH\\SDK\\Lib ;

and thus only pointing to the directory containing the mpich.lib ;-(

Thanks for your insight and sorry for this mistake. Probably error
reporting is currently the weak point of bjam ;-0
