Thanks this does shed some light.

I changed my TEMP and TMP environment variables to something without spaces.. this fixed the problem.

  Seems to me like something is 'wrong' in your system environment
causing Boost Build to issue an OS command containing spaced but without
quoting it. Please try the same example using the -d2 option and see if
that gives you and clues.

  I tries the same example (with the -d2 option) and here is what I got
(this is MSVC 7.1 on Windows XP SP3 with the current trunk version of
Boost build):
