    The version is 1.5.3.

     I deleted the file (project-config.jam). Now it works. 

     Thanks for that. Any particular reason for getting those error messages with project-config.jam?

project-config.jam is generated by bootstrap.sh.
What does it contain?  Also, what is in bootstrap.log?
project-config.jam isn't strictly necessary, so you
can try deleting it.

$ rm project-config.jam
$ ./b2 toolset=gcc
