Hmm, when our (non-incremental) tests run, we download to an NFS
mounted disk and the total download time never exceeds 10 minutes.
The current Boost svn configuration seems to work very well for us.

Oh, definitely... Both of those are slow individually. I can't even imagine how slow they would be in combination! Hence I doubt switching to the tarball would help you. Since expanding all the files out would likely be just as slow as the direct svn checkout.

I surprised trunk will even work with FAT32, at least without extensions.
