I just realized you are using mingw gcc4.  Mingw doesn't support gcc4 and you are generally advised to stay away from it for many reasons. 

gcc 4 remove #pragma comment(lib, "") support which is why auto-linking doesn't work.

That would be me.  I built gcc using msys, but I'm using the vanilla Windows
command window to build programs with gcc.

Anyway, that pseudo-disclaimer doesn't change what the rest of the document
implies about gcc and auto-linking, IMO.
