As I drove away after hurrying to finish my previous correspondence, I realized
that if I could convert one share of a jointly owned object into full ownership,
I could take the stock market by storm. 

It looks like I need a shared_ptr for any return type. Auto_ptr would work for
any of the input types.

How about a class template that holds ownership and copies - copied_ptr?
