Of related issue, is a window_view, which provides a circular sliding window
on a container. Its in http://www.zib.de/~weiser/vtl  It's not exactly what
you are proposing but it does some of the work, and may be of interest.

  Also I sounds like you have two problems. One is memory management, and
two is the circular container/iterator issue. I'd start out to divide and
conquer if I were you.
