Let me try to sway you back the other way, again :-) I think the choice
of reference counting can be accommodated. However, I think that it as a
declaration decision it should be explicit, whilst keeping usage
transparent. I also believe that it is a choice, so that the user should
be able to choose their preferred reference-counting implementation.
Such parameterisation happens on the outside not the inside of the
class.
