want to read an integer??

Hi 
i have a problem i want to read an intger the user supposed to enter 
i donot know what function i have to use NOTE i donot want to use 
cin>> (iostream.h) class
i know if we want to get a character we use gets(buffer)
//buffer is char*
so waht function i have to use to read an integer
hope i could get a replay
