Since version 7, I've added a timing test.  On my machine, I got the "crc"
function to be 170% slower than the customized version.  (My runs took 0.33s
for the custom version, 0.91s for the optimal Boost version, and 42s for the
basic Boost version.)  I want to put this up for formal review, so could
anyone who had problems running the previous formal version check if this
version works for them.
