Recommended techniques for downcasting with smart_ptrs

I have been reading on the mailing list about the possibility of
having smart_ptrs behave correctly in the precense of dynamic_casts
(or equivalent).

I saw the proposed method of Martin's in this message:

Is that the current recommended way to do this?  Is there development
going on to get this method integrated into boost?
