Actually I do have cygwin installed .. I suppose I could use that to build
the libraries for gcc, but I wouldn't be able to use the libraries in MSCV;
would I?

have used JAM+cygwin on Win98 to build boost successfully. I realize this
isn't
really solving the problem, but it might get around it...
