I recently came across a paper by P. Aubert, N. Dicesare, and O.
Pironneau,
"Automatic differentiation class by operator overloading"
available at http://www.ann.jussieu.fr/~pironneau/publi/publi.htm
There also seems to be some code available
http://www.ann.jussieu.fr/~pironneau/publi/software/fad.tar.gz

Did not look into it, but it seems they used expression templates.
