You have some good points.  I hate the twisty maze of ifdefs.  I
believe the unix/open source community learned why they need autoconf.

I have another problem with autoconf, however.  A number of the tools
used are not widely used and tend to be unfamiliar, such as M4.  I
wish there were a nicer alternative.
