That would be a much better, generic solution; it's just I've only ever had 
this problem with istream_iterator.

Ok, how about an iterator adaptor which simply keeps count of how many 
elements have been iterated over so far and indicates the sequence has ended 
when a specified number is reached? Would you find this useful?
