[boost] chat clients?

Hi,

The boost administrators want to set up a limited boost admin chat
session, but we don't know much about chat technologies. Can anyone
offer advice about the current preferred cross-platform chat engine? MSN
Messenger appears to have a Linux client or two, in addition to Mac and
Windows of course...
