I need it mainly for the smart pointers (and now for dyn_bitset, but since
it's a new library it should be easy to add support for it). As for the
autodetection bit, Comeau defines the symbol __EXCEPTIONS when exceptions
are activated. I'm not sure if this works for all EDG-based compilers or
not.
