Often the easiest solution is best, but with my shiny new generic
programming hammer, everything looks like a hammer.

Great idea, an thanks for the tip! I'll probably need it in other places in
the future too, so I'll be adding it to my generic-code-base.

Wouldn't such a routine be a sweet idea for the Boost smartpointer library?
A boost::get_raw_ptr specialized for shared_ptr, scoped_ptr, raw pointers,
etc?
