I've encountered this problem before.  I'm pretty sure this works:

funciton<void __cdecl(char const * name, int mode)> pf;

It requires that the calling convention be part of the type. This means a
macro, of course, so perhaps something like:

funciton<void BOOST_FUNCTION_TYPE(char const * name, int mode)> pf;
