Actually, discussing it made me go and look up how to fix it --- ensure that
"windows-1252" is listed in "vm-mime-default-face-charsets", and all is well.

Yours I-don't-have-to-type-DD-anymore-ly (to pinch a certain other person's
sign-off style)
