Well I guess you can call it tracing.
In LyX we have used it to "trace" different aspects of code:
key handling, font handling, the different subsystems: gui, math,
graphics. (and several others)
And we have all the trace code compiled in at all times, so that when
we suspect problem we can ask the user to turn on the required trace
(or combinations thereof)
We use it also for more general debug messages during development.
PS. When you say trace I usually just think about function call trace.
