A meta-comment about the process here: issues around variant have been
very contentious, and Eric has been very accomodating about offering
to adjust the design.  It's my feeling that design adjustments may be
happening too quickly.  We have little perspective on what's really
important for this library yet.  It might be better to gain some
implementation and use experience before we make any other changes,
especially so close to a release.
