It works for me, but there are some warnings when unpacking on a non-Linux
machine:

% gunzip -c boost_1_31_0.tar.gz | tar xf -
tar: ././@LongLink : Unknown filetype

This is a familiar problem for us. It only happens when the tar file was
created under Linux. Our workaround is to make tar files for multi-platform
distributions on a non-Linux machine.

Beman, I'd be happy to help making the tar file for the next release (the
executable flags should also be corrected as mentioned before by someone else).
