I haven't finished satisfying myself yet that the changes look correct
(I'm in the process of doing so whenever I had a little spare time),
and Malcolm Noyes has just pointed out to me that the Mac
implementation isn't finshed so I need to work on that. I do also hope
to add test cases to demonstrate at least some of the bugs.
