I've been wondering if it would make sense to drop in an apply_if,
just for this release, to smooth the transition. It would be trivial
to have it dispatch to eval_if. We can rip it out of the trunk as
soon as we branch for release so it will have to be fixed up before
next release.

It does seem a bit unrealistic to me, but I don't want to throw water
