Jody - I ran your code on Windows 2000, compiled with VC++ 7.1 and got
similar results :

The executable was built with the command 'cl -EHsc -O1
speed_test.cpp' (synchronous exception handling on, optimize for
speed) and pulled in static libraries for Boost.Signals, C/C++
runtimes etc.
