  This works for me (Win2k):

    #include <cstdio>
    #include <windows.h> // Sleep()

    const char* test[] = { "\rtesting... -"
                         , "\rtesting... \\"
                         , "\rtesting... |"
                         , "\rtesting... /"
                         };

    int main()
    {
      for( unsigned int u=0; u<100; ++u ) {
        std::printf( test[u%(sizeof(test)/sizeof(test[0]))] );
        ::Sleep(100);
      }
      printf("\rtesting...done\n");
      return 0;
    }

  Of course, this doesn't mean I'm sure it
  works in all cases.
