I was thinking of something that would allow for the user to switch out
algorithms easily. Using the GMP as an example implementation of this
would probably be good.
It's not quite that I don't want to compete with GMP's speed -- but I
don't think that a portably designed, pure C++ library is going to be
able to do it.
