Don't know if it helps, but GCC has some optimization hints:
// no side effects, may work on memory passed in through pointers
// and may read globals
int __attribute__((__pure__)) func(int);
// no side effects, may neither access memory passed in through
// pointers nor globals
int __attribute__((__const__)) func(int);
// always inline
int __attribute__((__always_inline__)) func(int);
