Shmem has get_shmem_OS_handle() function which returns a handle to the 
internal operating system shared memory handle (file descriptor in case 
of shared memory, and HANDLE type in Windows). I suppose (not sure about 
that, I haver never done that) that you can try to use select or poll 
with it.
