[boost] [build] symbolic vs hard library links

After building boost from svn on linux, I've noticed it produces a mix of 
symbolic and hard links for the built libraries (output of "ls -l" attached).  
I'm curious if this was intentional?  Have I just configured my source tree 
in some strange way?
