Have tried it over the weekend, and mainline gcc-4.0.1 on Linux miscompiles in 
exactly the same way you described, so I can now reproduce it (and yes, it is 
definitely a compiler bug). I am still trying to figure out what exactly is 
going wrong in gcc.
