Actually, to my surprise, I learned some years ago that "brackets" is the generic term for such things. In my experience, the only "brackets" were "square brackets," '[' and ']'. However, "curly braces," or simply "braces," are also "brackets." Likewise, "parentheses" are also "brackets." I still prefer "curly braces," "square brackets," and "parentheses" as the "proper" names for such things, but that is likely regional.

In this case, omitting "brackets" is best: "Each format specifier is enclosed between '{' and '}'."
