The only competitive dimension I can think of is speed, but for that a generic boost library is not the easiest road: I've seen people implement the the whole stack including TCP/IP on FPGA, the reason is that they can afford custom development and don't need to rely on elegant open source libraries.
A good question is: will you have customers?
