Thinking about it that doesn't surprise me.

But I wonder if it's necessary that MPI depends on array_wrapper?  It 
seems to me that it would only depend upon it if one is transmitting an 
array.

and of course it doesn't help the the serialization library is a little 
ambiguous regarding what its type requirements are.
