it works for me too.
Strange but that you have.
Are you sure your boost is correctly installed ?

v(i) = i;
assigns i to v at position i
the () is an overloaded operator in ublas::vector equivalent to []
So here you could write
v(i) = i;
or
v[i] = i;
For matrices, however, you need to write
m(i,j) = value;
