Optional docs build fine for me here, there is some getting started
guidance here:
https://svn.boost.org/trac10/wiki/BoostDocs/GettingStarted on getting
set up for building with quickbook etc.

Just another thing to double check: are you using the Docbook 4.2 DTD? 
Using a later one will result in inscrutable errors.
