I wouldn't be so sure about that. From the Jetbrains build system survey [1]:
CMake 42%
Visual Studio project 37%
Makefiles 33%
CMake is definitely popular but given that it is only a third more
popular than a raw Makefile, calling it the "de-facto standard" is a
bit premature.
