I'm not sure about "the Right Thing", as I never build anything "in
tree". In fact, I believe that building a stand-alone documentation tree
is very useful for example because it allows to be packaged and
installed separately.
For the Boost.Python project I'm doing this: I build the docs and upload
them to http://boostorg.github.io/python/.
In fact, I have gone a step beyond installing the resources (css, js,
pngs): I have cloned them into the Boost.Python repo at
https://github.com/boostorg/python, as that allows me to build
Boost.Python stand-alone. (It still requires some Boost components as
prerequisites, which may either come from the system's package manager,
or be installed separately as shown in my project's Travis CI logic in
https://github.com/boostorg/python/blob/develop/.travis.yml
