I think both of these are good suggestions for future development. As for
1.33.1 only bug fixes should go in. There are a few serious bugs which have
been fixed. But even these fixes have not been extensively tested yet.

I will try and merge bug fixes from the current CVS head into the 1.33 branch
so they can be tested in-situe ASAP.

Both 1) and 2) require a lot of work because I think they should be extended
to all types and would need documentation.
