Interesting, I would like to understand what you are saying here.

Are you saying lu_factorize 'crashes' or the complete suggested code sequence 
for inversion 'crashes'?
Can you detail what you mean by 'crash'!!

Looking at the code lu_factorize returns a 'singular' value. I assume this 
should be checked against the rank of the matrix before continuing with back 
substitution.
