Thanks for the hint. This most likely got me on the right track - and
I found ways to access the underlying matrix storage:
#include <boost/numeric/bindings/traits/ublas_vector.hpp>
#include <boost/numeric/bindings/traits/ublas_sparse.hpp>
#include <boost/numeric/bindings/traits/ublas_matrix.hpp>
namespace traits = boost::numeric::bindings::traits;
traits::spmatrix_index1_storage(A);
traits::spmatrix_index2_storage(A);
traits::spmatrix_value_storage (A);
