BGL and reversing / moving edges

G'day, I was hoping someone might be able to tell me if they've run into any situations using BGL where they needed to move (or reverse (i.e. flip the source and target)) an edge within a graph implemented as an adjacency_list. I'm working on an implementation of an algorithm for max. weight bipartite matching ("the assignment problem"), and one of the assumptions in the algorithm is that non-matched edges are directed from one subgraph, A, to the other subgraph, B, and matched edges are directed the other way. Over the course of growing the matching, a simple way to add and remove edges from the candidate set is just to reverse the edge, thus the need for some way to reverse the edge within BGL. I don't think I can just remove and then re-add the edge in the other direction, primarily because doing so will (I believe) invalidate any edge_descriptors referring to that edge. In particular, there are property maps keeping track of the weight of edges, the predecessors of certain nodes, etc. that use edge descriptors as keys. I've spent a fair bit of time reading the documentation and looking through the implementation of adjacency_lists (incl. edge_list_impl), and I'm not really sure of a way to either move an edge directly within a graph, or even to create a new edge from another s.t. they have the same edge_descriptor (in general a bad thing, probably). bjam and windows command line problem.

I have Win98 in Spanish, and I use Borland C++ Builder 5.0 (its bcc32.exe corresponds to is BCC5.5.1) I have boost 1.29.0 installed at: "C:\Libraries\boost\Repository\boost" I've downloaded bjam for Microsoft Windows: >bjam -v Boost.Jam Version 3.1.0. Understanding MPL

I am trying to understand how the MPL library works. I first read "The Boost C++ Metaprogramming Library" by Aleksey Gurtovoy and David Abrahams. When I get to Basic Usage I see this: template< typename Condition , typename T1 , typename T2 > struct if_ { typedef /*unspecified*/ type; }; I am really having trouble understanding the next to last line. How can "typedef type;" be a valid C++ construct and, if it is, what does it mean ? I always though that a typedef must specify an actual type but I don't see any in the expression above.

building boost with vc7

Hello, I've just downloaded boost_1_30_0 and it turns out that there are two ways to build regex lib: bjam nmake /f vc7.mak However, they produce different libraries, and regex headers explicitly include ones generated by the makefile. e.g: boost_regex_vc7_mdi.lib boost_regex_vc7_mdid.lib ..... So, here are a few questions: -- why do above commands generate different libs? -- the nmake generates a full set of libs, but bjam does not, why? -- no other libs do have makefiles, why? Problems building on Mac-OSX

I'm trying to build boost 1.30 on Mac OS-X 1.2.4. I'm using the compiler that came with the system, GCC-3.1. When I do "bjam -sTOOLS=darwin", I get a variety of errors and warnings. I get the warning "enumeration value `type_pf' not handled in switch", in several places in libs/regex/src/cregex.cpp. In all cases, the offending lines are protected by ifdefs: #ifndef BOOST_REGEX_NO_FILEITER case re_detail::RegExData::type_pf: return pdata->fm[i].matched; #endif It would appear that BOOST_REGEX_NO_FILEITER should be defined in the darwin environment, but isn't. This is the first time I've just Jam, so I'm at a loss to figure out why it's not set right, or how to fix it. More importantly, I get 6 failures. containers of boost::function objects

I am trying to create a simple mechanism to register multiple callbacks with my class. My first simple-minded approach is to use std::list< boost::function2< [my params]> > Unfortunately, I cannot search this list to unregister callbacks, as any attempt to dereference a list::iterator tries to call the function, rather than return the function object. After spotting this problem in the standard algorithms I have been trying to hack around myself, explicitly calling operator* and even operator-> with no joy. Am I missing some easy way to get the function object out of the iterator as a value? And is this a bug in my compiler (BCB6) or a general issue for containers of function objects? -- AlisdairM

linking Signals Library

System: Red Hat 8.0 with gcc 3.2 Boost 1_30_0 I have built the boost signals library using bjam. The test suite runs and passes all tests. How do I make the resulting libraries available to my own programs? Is there an equivalent of 'make install' which will move the results to somewhere from which linking is possible? I have searched the documentation on Boost Signal and also on building libraries and have found nothing on this. Thanks John Fletcher

[BGL] Problem with setS adjacency lists

Hello, I want an undirected graph with non-multiple edges. So I use a graph defined as : adjacencylist<setS,vecS,undirectedS,SomeProperty> But, if I insert many times the same edge with: add_edge(2,3) add_edge(1,4) add_edge(2,3) add_edge(3,2) I obtain in fact 3 edges 2<->3 which I really don't want. Is there something else to do to avoid having multiple edges linking the same vertices ? And then, is there a way to user hash_set with g++-3.2 ? The problem being that hash_set is defined in the file ext/hash_set and in the namespace __gnu_cxx ... I've also changed bad_lexical_cast, to return the types used, in source()/target(), as given in Kevlin's suggestion (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.devel/18240) As a small change, the warning with MSVC 7 for void * -> bool conversion is removed, using Kevlin's suggestion (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.devel/18253) I've run the tests for Intel C++ 7.0 (strict mode), MSVC 7.0 (with and without wchar_t as intrinsic type), and MSVC 6.0, and it works. Why "explicit" in shared_ptr's constructor?

Hello, I am a newbie user of boost. I have a question about boost::shared_ptr. Suppose you have a polimorphic list: class entity{ ...}; class simple_entity : public entity{ public: uint id; simple_entity(uint i) : id(i) {} }; int main(){ list<shared_ptr<entity> > l; ... I noticed the following code doesn't compile l.push_back(new simple_entity(1)); too bad, because it was very easy to read, and very similar to the behavior if standard pointers (not to speak about similarity to Java and C#). So I am forced to do l.push_back(shared_ptr<entity> (new simple_entity(1))); which is less readable and, IMHO, barely tolerable on the long run: too much typing. It seems that the reason is the explicit keyword in the constructor. My question is: why? what was the danger without the explicit? Thank you very much for any info, Maurizio

the danger comes from code like so: void foo(boost::shared_ptr<entity> p) { ... } void bar() { entity* e = new entity; foo(e); delete e; } Allowing a pointer to be converted to a shared_ptr implicitly could cause serious bugs. Hello, Had a quick look into uBLAS library, and noted the incompatibility between std::vector<> and ublas' binary operations. For example, I have an ublas::matrix<> and wanted to multiply it by a std::vector<>. Since _all_ of ublas data containers provide iterators, I'm wondering why the library doesn't provide algorithms that work on iterators? In this way data structures and operators will be decoupled. BGL properties question

I would like to write a "generic" routine that prints the named vertex and edges properties. BGL 1.30.0 upgrade problem

'boost::detail' problem

I do also a problem with some code that used to work in 1.29. This is correct. The 'debug' configuration is meant to work with a release version of Python, though I don't know why. However, there is no need to modify the Jamfile; just use the 'debug-python' configuration instead. Also, make sure you include <pyconfig.h> before any of the Boost.Python headers, because not all of them do that and you can end up with incorrect structure definitions in a debug build if you don't. (I should report this bug.)

newbie build question (threads and win32)

Hi, I'm trying to use Boost's threads on WIN32 using VC++ and having some difficulty. I've built the source cd D:\boost\boost_1_30_0; bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc" and after the build is done, there are some errors, but they all appear related to the regression testing. Then I cd libs\thread\build; bjam "-sTOOLS=msvc" and everything appears to work fine. However, my simple program can't compile. I get this error: d:\boost\boost_1_30_0\boost\thread\thread.hpp(17) : fatal error C1189: #error : Thread support is unavailable! My test program simply is: #include <boost/thread/thread.hpp> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { printf("Hello World!\n"); return 0; } I can't seem to figure out why threads aren't enabled. I realize this is a very simple question, but I'd love to hear what silly thing I've done wrong. Thanks in advance for your help. dave

I agree :( I tried to use the debugger, but once it went into stlport_icl.dll I couldn't see which ostream function was being called. I'm currently trying to change the ostream signature to take a reference rather than a copy, in hopes that that will help. test report_level in 1.30.0

We just upgraded from 1.29.0 to 1.30.0 and started having a problem running in the unit test framework. When we start the test with the command line parameter "--report_level=detailed" the tests crash. They work fine if we set the environment parameter BOOST_TEST_REPORT_LEVEL=detailed, or when we set other command line parameters, such as "--log_level=detailed". I looked at the code in libs/test/src/unit_test_main.cpp and saw that the command line parsing for report_level doesn't occur until after the unit test suite has been invoked. It appears that the unit test is then getting a command line that contains "--report_level=detailed". In our case, it doesn't know what to do with this. I hacked our copy of unit_test_main.cpp to parse the command line for --report_level before starting the unit test suite, storing the value locally. Has anyone else had this problem? Are we using the unit test framework the wrong way? Do you think I fixed it the right way, and will there be an official fix soon? Thanks, -John Van Horne

Most efficient way to convert a run of Perl substitutions til boost::regex?

Hi! I'm converting a Perl program that basically consists of a succession of regex transformations of the input string, eg.: #Case 1 - mutually exclusive endings s/erens$/\@r\@ns_/; s/ernes$/\@rn\@s_/; s/endes$/\@n\@s_/; s/estes$/\@st\@s_/; #Case 2: - a load of manipulations done in sequence s/jou/sju/g; s/jau/sjo/g; s/nch/ngk/g; Now the question is, how do I convert this to boost::regex code that runs as fast as possible. I expect to have to call the function implementing these transformations (there are /many/) about half a million times at runtime, and as I'm concerned about runtime performance, I'd obviously like to use the most efficient method available. I expect that Case #2 is simple, as I can use the regex_merge function, and nest the calls as in: static const boost::regex re1("jou"); static const boost::regex re1("jau"); static const boost::regex re1("nch"); static const std::string fs1("sju"); static const std::string fs2("sjo"); static const std::string fs3("ngk"); std::string res = regex_merge( regex_merge( regex_merge(input_string, re1, fs1) , re2, fs2) , re3, fs3); As to case 1, I guess I'd have to use a combination of the grep and format functions, and in the case as shown it'd be easy, as there is either one match or none for each line. We have a handy little tool for generating enums with associated string conversion and stream insertion/extraction functions. When we upgraded to boost 1.30.0, lexical_cast'ing one of these enums to std::string started behaving incorrectly, rather than the name, it is giving me the integral value. It seems that the lexical_stream is being used. Unfortunately, my test case is working fine. The complete test case (including definition of ZAcquisition::PPG) is appended at the end. Boost thread question

I am having trouble getting the boost thread library to work. I am using Borland C++Builder 6 (on Win2k), and I tried the 1.29.0 release and the 1.30.0.b1 beta release and both give me the same errors in the condition.hpp file: line 93: " 'operator!' not implemented in type 'recursive_mutex' for arguments of the same type" and line 96: " 'recursive_mutex::m_mutex' is not accessible" Plus another 5 errors. I tried to look at the condition and recursive_mutex class definitions and I do not understand how they are implemented. Am I using it wrong to get that error? Let me know if you need a code sample. multi_array iterators ??

I am intersted in a simple way to iterate on a multi_array (or better yet a multi_array_view) regardless of dimension or ranges or order of access. I suppose for the entire multi_array one can use the data() method to return a T* and step through the contiguous memory block. But the case for a multi_array_view doesn't not seem nearly so simple taking into account strides, offsets, and degenerate ranges and all. Thanks in advance for any advice.

BCB6 Internal compiler error in "linear_congruential.hpp" from the random library

Hi, to whomever it may concern: I just downloaded boost 1.30 and tried to recompile my libraries and applications. Spirit semantic actions and closures

Hi I have a question about semantic actions which generate the equivalent of synthesized attributes. It seems that the right hand side of the expression below rule = element [rule.val = val_type(some_params)]; will require the type of val in the closure associated with rule to be val_type which has a constructor which looks like val_type::val_type(some_params). Its not clear to me however how I would synthesize an attribute which is a pointer to some type. For example, in the closure I would like the type of synthesized attribute to be val_type* and for the right hand side of assignment above to be val_type(some_params)() which returns a val_type* where the following was true of the () operator : const val_type* val_type::operator () {do something and eventually return a val_type*;} I'd be very grateful if someone could clue me in on how I might do this. thanks venkat

ublas: questions from a newcomer

I am interested in ublas for linear algebra. In addition to the simple operations supported by ublas I will need comprehensive access to lapack for the real work. I see in the wiki that some work has been done in this area. Is this numeric/binding stuff working, and can it be readily extended to the full set of lapack routines? Some kind of meta program to generate lapack interfaces from a parameter spec would be nice (ruby/perl? or just a description of what needs to be done) Then I could happily bring up the interfaces I need. Is there any way to generate vectore and matrices which do not own the data buffer which they provide access to - 'view' or 'sub' objects in other lin alg packages? This would be very valuable to me for interfacing existing code, without duplicating storage and doing unnecessary copies. I found it difficult to determine from the current documentation. I have one worry: Ublas, and most of the boost modules, seems to me not for the faint hearted. They are clearly powerful, but seem to expect a lot from a potential user. Are these facilities aimed at library writers rather than users whoes skill focus may lie in other domains? I am thinking of apl (and related J++ (not java)) which is very powerful, but has only minority appeal because it is too alien and unnatural for ordinary mortals. The advocates take great pride in how powerful a small and almost incomprehensible line of code can be (FFT in one short line etc.), and implicitly how clever they are to generate and understand it. I expect that a user level doc may eventually make ublas/lapack much more approachable by a non computer science mathematician or engineer. Forgive me if the above sounds critical and ungracious for free software, but I want to use boost and I am worried that it may be too demanding for its benefites to be justified for use by the group of people I work with. -- Stuart

If you cannot (or won't) perform the initialization in the constructor initializer, you'll need to reset the shared_array like so: p_data.reset(new uint8[data_length]); Or, in the initializer: c_Packet::c_Packet (const c_Packet & r_packet) : p_data(new uint8[r_packed.data_length]) { data_length = r_packet.data_length; ... } ...and then perform the memcpy. By the way, you are actually sharing this data, right? If not, scoped_array would probably be a better choice for managing resource lifetime. Bjorn Karlsson

regarding the quality of math functions in stl/boost

I've often heard that you should never trust your system implementation of functions like sqrt, exp, sin, cos, rand, etc. Instead, most mathematicians say that one should use an implementation that is known to be accurate up to some order. Unfortunately, using third-party code for these functions hinders portability. I know that boost has a formidable random number generation library that uses the cmath versions of basic math functions. Does the stl standard, or various implementations of stl, make any gaurantees about the accuracy of these basic math functions? Are they safe to use for mathematical applications in practice? I am trying new 1.30.0 release and got couple of problems on MSVC6 SP5.
