Problem compiling boost under gcc

Hi, This is a followup to my previous message. I must be doing something wrong, but I am unable to compile boost under gcc 3.2.2 on a Red Hat Linux machine (RH9 linux 2.4.24). Note, I also tried gcc 2.95.3 with the same results. If anyone has the time or the desire to help me out, it would be much appreciated. Here is what I did to install: First go to tools/build/jam_src and build jam: sh build.sh Then cd back to the boost root dir, and install: tools/build/jam_src/bin.linuxx86/bjam --sTOOLS=gcc --prefix=~/local/linux install I get a lot of errors relating to the HardLink command. (I am wondering if the problem might be caused by the bjam program.) I checked the things I thought might be causing problems: The target directory does exist, but the files are not getting copied into that directory (eg. by the FileClone command). I have write permissions in the target directory. I am attaching the output from the compile process. Sincerely, Daniel Huber

bjam options

I agree with the "nuclear engineer" that the "Getting Started" instructions are a little confusing, but I think it is at least as good as (for example) the instructions for MySQL. There are a few things that are not clear, and I will post separate messages for most of them. One little detail is that the the "Getting Started" instructions use double quotes in the examples of the bjam options, yet as best as I can determine, the double quotes don't work. In other words, the following does not work: bjam "--help" And the following works: bjam --help It is true that there is an example showing the version that works, but I missed seeing it until I began writing this message and the other examples are confusing to the extent that they make it seem as if the double quotes are needed. So in other words, I don't understand why the double quotes are shown in the sample uses of bjam.

My Boost got built

Is there a description of what additional files need to be copied? I used the following to build Boost for Visual C++ with Windows XP: Call "S:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98\Bin\VCVARS32.BAT" Set MSVC_ROOT=S:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98 "S:\Software\Boost\boost-jam-3.1.10-1-ntx86\bjam" -sTOOLS=msvc --prefix="S:\ Software\Boost" --builddir="T:\boost_1_31_0\BuildDir" install Pause That seems to have worked. Except I did see some messages saying some stuff were not found. That is not relevant to this question, though. I copied the sample in the Variant documentation to get the directories set properly and ensure that that much (Variant) works. So now (I assume) I don't need to use most of the files (in the "T:" partition) that I used to build and "install" Boost from. However I see there are some documentation files in the "install from" files that are not in my installed files, so I assume I should copy the documentation files. I realize that the files are also online but I will use the local copy that is provided. Is there something somewhere specifying what else should be saved from the "install from" files? I intend to make the "T:" partition unavailable normally but I can keep it so that I can get to it when I need to, but it would help to know what I need to copy first. If this is not described anywhere, then I just want to say that it would help. Until then, I assume I can figure it out.

install | stage

The definition of the terms "install" and "stage" is obviously clear to those that know what they mean, but it is not clear to me how they relate to Boost. I have worked with software for more than a quarter of a century, and I have even developed a couple of software promotion packagers, so I do have a basic understanding of the terms "install" and "stage". As best as I can guess, an "install" would be a combination of a "stage" and something else. So I assume I can do an install, but I might be wrong. So I think it would help to define those terms a bit more for the "Getting Started" page, for the benefit of all. For me, I have a Windows system and I have downloaded: http://aleron.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/boost/boost_1_31_0.zip I have unzipped that to a temporary location. It is not clear to me if that will work. I am not sure if I can do an "install" and have everything I need put in the location I specify for using Boost. If that is explained somewhere then I apologize for missing it, but I think it is not made very clear.

Boost Installation Help needed

Howdy, Sorry if this gets posted twice. i tried the webpage over at news.gmane.org, but it doesn't look like it got posted, so I subscribed(yay). Anyway, I'm trying to install Boost on Windows with the DJGPP compiler for c++. I've basically done nothing but get one big headache trying to follow the instructions at boost.org. So far, I have bjam in my windows\system32 directory. I tried to set it up to use DJGPP, a variant of gcc, but it doesn't seem to like my request. bjam keeps trying to use g++ instead of gpp, even though I gave it the GXX=gpp option. It also can't seem to find the directory of DJGPP, even though I used the GCC_ROOT_DIRECTORY=C:\DGJPP\ option as well. I am thoroughly stumped, and the documents over at boost.org seem to have been written by monkeys, albeit ones with good spelling and grammar. I am fairly computer literate, but those things are like rocket science to me(and I'm a nuclear engineer ;)) I'd use Boost.Build's .bat file, but I can't get bjam to work right, and then God only knows what I'll do from there, so I'd greatly appreciate a more "step-by-step" approach which is geared towards a WindowsXP user. mpl related question

Hello mpl experts, I'm trying to initialize the elements of an array using rules defined in a list of structures. The code below illustrate what I'm trying to achieve. The problem I have with this code is that the First_Descriptor structure contain this index member that will be used to access the right item of the array. This is not nice because it force the writer of this structure to deal with implementation details. Is there a way to get rid of this index typedef in the *_Descriptor structures by using another construct from the mpl that would generate it ? // The array I need to initialize. BGL in mangaged C++ (.Net )

Has anyone had success running the BGL from with managed C++ code? I have code that compiles fine, but at runtime throws a .Net exception called TypeLoadException. Googleing and documentation I have read are no help. The graph used is a plain vanilla adjacency_list<> and the exception occurs durring the resize operation of the vertex vector. thanks in advance bille

I think typically the solution is to just prefix std:: to everything. Once you get used to doing it, it doesn't even seem cumbersome anymore. Bidirectionnal filtered multigraph

I've created a bidirectional filtered multigraph from an adjacency_list with vectorS and listS as containers for the vertices and egdes respectively. It seems the function edge(u,v,g) does not work properly for this kind of graph. I can detect the existence of an edge (u,v) if I iterate explicitly through the out_edges of the filtered graph but not if I use edge() directly on the filtered graph. Also, I get an exception when I remove an edge that was invisible to the edge(u,v,g) function while the bidirectionnal version of remove_edge for adjacency_list is erasing the edge ID form the in_edge list of the graph. [BGL] Importing adjacency list from a txt file

Hi, I've got a file with the adjacency list of a graph, where each line contains the node index followed by the index of nodes that are adjacent to it (comma-separated). One of the lines of this file could read like: 1,3,4 This would mean that node '1' is adjacent to nodes '3' and '4' (undirected & unweighted graph). I'm declaring it as: typedef adjacency_list < vecS, vecS, undirectedS, no_property, no_property > Graph; Graph g; My question is: is there a simple way of reading the adjacency list into the graph from my txt file? I found Kevin_Bacon, but was looking for something more powerful. Then I found adjacency_list_io.cpp (is it documented?), but it wouldn't compile on MSVC. Am I missing something obvious? Thanks, Rui

bind and weak pointers

What is the prefered method of creating a boost::function<void()>, via boost bind, that is calling a member function of a class, and that class instance is held inside the bind object as a weak ptr. Thus, when the function is called, it will try to lock the shared_ptr, if successful it calls the bound function, otherwise it does nothing. Is there an standard way of doing this? Or do I have to write my own custom intermediate function? (which is how I do it now). Jeff

Hello boost-users(a)lists.boost.org, It seems to me that currently lambda's bind does not support shared_ptr as a second argument to bind, when first argument is a pointer-to-member. But boost::bind handles it perfectly. It would be nice for me to be able to write something like this: using namespace boost::lambda; struct SomeClass { int member1; }; boost::shared_ptr<SomeClass> ptr(new SomeClass); (bind(&SomeClass::member1, ptr) = _1)(5); Is it possible with current implementation of lambda?
