Comiling Boost with VC++.net

My IDE for C++ is VC++.net I heard that it is impossible to compile Boost with its compiler. I replaced the compiler with the VC++.net 2003 Toolkit Compiler, but it still doesn't work. Can anyone help me compiling with the VC++.net 2003 Toolkit?

Hi, I have some questions about signals. If I add a function to both Hello and World, from the "Hello World" example, called alternate() and set up signals like so: boost::signal<void (Hello*) > sig_h; boost::signal< void (World*) > sig_w; sig_h.connect(boost::mem_fn(&Hello::alternate)); sig_w.connect(boost::mem_fn(&World::alternate)); I have to define two different signals since the object type is part of the signal definition. Is there an easy way to get a single signal to call the alternate() function of both Hello and World? I recently found this signal slot solution. http://www.codeproject.com/cpp/ElmueSignalsandSlots.asp There is an extra level of indirection here, in that you define a slot that points to the function. I'd be interested to see what people on this forum think about this solution. If I understand things correctly, this solution doesn't seem to fit into the categories listed in the "Choice of Slot Definitions" docs. Also a general signal slot question. Angus- I had similar problems with bjam under MinGW. By experimentation, I discovered that I could make bjam work under MinGW by moving it from it's previous location at 'c:/msys/1.0/bin' to 'c:/msys/1.0/mingw/bin'. Please forgive the newbie questions, but I am trying and failing to build boost with MinGW. I've grabbed the CVS sources of boost from the sourceforge anonymous mirror. I've installed MinGW and MinSYS. The MinGW tools are in my path. (From my understanding of the docs at http://www.boost.org/tools/build/v1/mingw-tools.html, that shouldn't be necessary.) I have changed the TOOLS name to 'mingw' rather than 'mgw'. Again , no dice. Finally, in desperation, opening up a DOS prompt and repeating the exercise. Nope. Same result. Can anyone help me out? Regards, Angus

problem with CVS Boost.Python with MSVC

The CVS change to boost/boost/python/detail/prefix.hpp from revision 1.3 to 1.4 has obviated the effect of boost/boost/python/detail/wrap_python.hpp in _DEBUG when compiling with MSVC. Python now forces the debug library as if BOOST_DEBUG_PYTHON is permanently in effect. Revision 1.3 does not exhibit this problem. The added #include <pyconfig.h> is the cause. Stephen D Evans

dangerous use of boost::bind

Dear all, In my work I use the boost libraries quite frequently, especially boost::bind to create function objects. However its use is not as transparent as I hoped for. Especially using functions in boost bind with signatures returning const& can give unpredictable results. For example: struct KX { KX (int i); //etc. }; typedef std::pair<int, KX> pair_t; pair_t do_kx_pair(int i) { return std::make_pair(i, KX(i)); } //following will go wrong: KX x = boost::bind(&pair_t::second, boost::bind(&do_kx_pair, i))(); The last line compiles on Visual .NET 2003 without any warning (even on level 4). However after spending two days in boost bind source code, I could see that it actually returns const& to a temporary created by boost bind. The reason for this is that arguments are copied by value, and thus functions with const & (or in this case pointer to member) can return then const & from temporaries. Is there no way that at least boost::bind could issue a compiler warning? Because now I have to think deep before I create a nested boost bind construction. For example the following construction is not wrong; the const & is again taken from a temporary which boost::bind holds, but this is destroyed after the expression: KX x = boost::bind(&pair_t::second, do_kx_pair(i))(); If this is not solvable, perhaps it's a good idea to include this case in the documentation. Wkr, me (btw boost::bind is a great improvement over the std::mem_fun and std::bind1st etc.)

Problems with boost::format and Visual C++ 7.0

I have trouble compiling code that makes use of the boost::format library. In particular I get compile errors from basic_format::operator= method (line 90 format_implementation.hpp). If I change the body to look like if(this == &x) return *this; basic_format<Ch, Tr> x1(x); // These 2 lines used x1.swap(*this); // to be 1 return *this; It compiles. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Directory_Iterator causes MFC App to Freeze

Hi, I am writing an MFC program in MSVC7 that must pass a path from one dialog box to another upon pressing a button. I attempt to pass the path to the next dialog by using a directory iterator: fs::directory_iterator startIt(scanPath); (***) where scanPath is an object of type path. PICtoolProgressWnd temp(this,startIt); I pass the iterator into the constructor for the second dialog. When I attempt to run this program, my program just hangs after clicking the button and I cannot exit it. The second dialog never appears. The only way out is to Alt-Ctrl-Delete out of the program. The only other clue given is that when the program freezes, the "xstring" file opens with a green arrow pointing at what appears to be a definition of operator= or something of that sort. I have commented out practically all of my code in the button click event handler and determined that when the iterator is declared, (***) above, the program freezes. When this line is commented out, the program responds. What could I be doing wrong?? Using MPL to write is_derived_from_std_basic_ostream

I'm trying to ascertain whether a given class is, or is derived from, std::basic_ostream, but I've ground to a halt. The attached code successfully reports those classes that do derive from std::basic_ostream but fails to compile when I test std::string, bool, char etc. I can see what is going wrong, but have run out of ideas about how to fix it. I'm also painfully aware that my attempts are just plain ugly. Can someone show me the way forward? Regards, Angus

I've got some code that uses the format library to format output, not out of necessity, but rather out of a wanton enjoyment derived from using the syntax, having lately (relatively) discovered boost, prefering the boost::format simple syntax to the posix printf and std::ostringstream flavored solutions. Problem using Boost Signals HPP file

I am using vc7.1 MS Visual Studio 2003. I have tried using the boost signals (boost/signal.hpp) library in both my application and a Visual Stuido project file using the signal_test.cpp file. (made a blank C++ win32 console app project file- and then added the include dir for boost- I did nothing else). in either case I get: Compiling... signal_test.cpp Linking... LINK : fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_signals-vc71-sgd-1_31.lib' Build log was saved at file://c:\Rmtg\Root\_Common\_Lib\Boost\V_1_31\libs\signals\test\signal_test\signal_test\Debug\BuildLog.htm signal_test - 1 error(s), 0 warning(s) ---------------------- Done ---------------------- Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 skipped My project file is quite bare other than pointing to boost as an include dir. I am perplexed on how visual studio is even AWARE of the lib name (since I did not tell it). On the machine I am using, I have not built boost static or dll libs. That would solve my problem, but not completely as what I *need* to do is use the hpp and *not* link to the lib. My questions: has anyone run into this before? Is Boost::signals supposed to work by just being able to #include the hpp? Any thoughts here? (one of those situations where I am really scratching my head). **ANY** thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated

generic factory creator

In my example data is passed between objects using a Data_Source. I want to hide the method data is passed from what the value is of the data. So a object receiving it does not need to be concerned with whether the data is coming from a file or database. In my situation I have three data sources for information: a file, memory pointer or database. Each of these data sources can handle a std::string, a Memory_Object, and a Graph_Object type as its internal data structure. The question I want to understand is how to create a generic interface to create the appropriate factory. Here is the table of the possible data source combinations (3 types * 3 sources = 9 possible). So more types and more sources can make creating the right Data_Source an ugly experience for maintaining the code. Right now I get the right compilor error for Data_Source_Factory_Creator::get_Factory() because given Data_Source_Factory is a template class I need to instantiate this template correctly. I don't know how to make this function return a generic type so that I can do: Data_Source_Factory<File_Data_Source>* m_factory = Data_Source_Factory_Creator::get_Factory(); Any ideas? Signals - last call

Hello everyone, I have a question concerning signals. I wanted to force one of the callbacks to be called last. Obviously this needs to be done in an agnostic way since the calling function will probably not know how many other callbacks are connected and so on. Building boost as part of larger project which also uses jam

I've built and installed boost on a WinXp system with VS.Net 2003. I'm trying to use it in a static CRT project. I get the following error whenever I compile: > error C1189: #error : "Mixing a dll boost library with > a static runtime is a really bad idea..." I noticed that this is happening because BOOST_DYN_LINK is #defined in config.hpp. Apparently dynamic linking is the default for Boost? Anyway, I've commented out this #define, but now I get a ton of warnings like the following > warning C4275: non dll-interface class 'std::logic_error' > used as base for dll-interface class 'boost::lock_error' and the project won't link > error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_thread-vc71-mt-s-1_31.lib' I looked in Boost's lib folder and there aren't any static thread binaries (eg, "libboost_thread_xxx.lib). There are only the dynamic libraries (boost_thread_xxx.lib). Apparently something failed in the build process. I have to admit I didn't sit and watch the build process for the half-hour it took to build, so something may have gone wrong. Is there a build log somewhere? Hi, Just want to know *exactly* how to use boost::signals in a Qt project. I read this : http://www.boost.org/doc/html/ch06s04.html but I don't understand how to do it. I try to recompile boost with : "-sBUILD=<define>BOOST_SIGNALS_NAMESPACE=signalslib". After that, I try to directly change BOOST_SIGNALS_NAMESPACE in signals_common.hpp but didn't work neither. newbie: bjam with mwcw, #include "user" and <system> paths

Hi, I am a newbie and have a few questions. 1. Re: bjam suspicious output with Metrowerks CodeWarrior 9.2 My command line tools times goes back to mpw on the Mac pre 1990... The boost documentation looks very good but it still assumes a knowledge of command line tools. I have managed to build 2 Win targets: One that I hope I will be able to drop into a large ms vc7.2 solution and an other for a mw cw 9.2 workspace. (I sure wish boost deployed ready made .vcproj and .mcp files...) I have extracted the boost source to: C:\boost_1_31_0 I have also downloaded bjam.exe (3.1.10-1-ntc86) and copied it to the boost_1_31_0 root. So, I launched a cmd window: cd C:\boost_1_31_0 bjam "-sVC71_ROOT=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003\Vc7" install. This generates: C:\Boost\ - include\ - lib\ include\ is basically a copy of the source without a few make specific files but with all the platform specific source intact. I assume this is a "basic installation" for use with ms vc7. I have managed to use it making a few tests with boost::shared_ptr. So far so good. I proceeded to make the mwcw target after renaming C:\Boost\ to C:Boost_vc7\. bjam "-sCWPRO8_ROOT=C:\Program Files\Metrowerks\CodeWarrior" install This process is much much faster and the new files I get in C:\Boost\include and C:Boost\lib are exactly the same as those generated a while ago by the vc7 compiler (the libs have exactly the same timestamp). In fact it doesn't look as if anything is ever compiled. This is making me suspicious. However I have managed to make a similar test with boost::shared_ptr. Off course, none of the generated libraries are involved so I am probably just kidding myself. 2. The boost source is mixing "user" and <system> paths. For instance in boost\any.hpp: #include "boost/config.hpp" #include <boost/throw_exception.hpp> Is this intentional? If so, why? It is forcing me to add the boost root to both the UserPaths and System Paths settings. This is very unfortunate. I can"clean this up" but that's going to cause work when upgrading. 3. Does anyone here have experience adding boost to a large vc7.1 solution in such a way as to cause zero noise. In other words, next time your collegues synchronize, everything should be automagic - no need to have any one change local settings or read long and boring installation e-mails which is bound to fail anyway. Mirroring the boost hiearchy in a CodeWarrior project is child's play. In msvc it's more like a nightmare because one has to create the sub directories manually, one at a time :-). I can deal with the #include paths issues by adding ".." to projects Additional Include Directories". Msvc does not seem to care whether it's a "user" or <system> path. I'd be interested to know how people deal deal with this in general. regards, Conrad Weyns

On SuSE Linux 9.1 using both my own build of boost 1.31, and SuSE provided rpms, as well as both my own build of gcc 3.3.3 and the one from SuSE, I was not able to build this file found in the boost source tree boost_1_31_0/libs/test/example/exec_mon_example.cpp It can also be found here: http://www.boost.org/libs/test/example/exec_mon_example.cpp This is what happens: $ g++ -o exec exec_mon_example.cpp /tmp/ccGtnzc0.o(.text+0x107): In function `main': : undefined reference to `boost::execution_monitor::execute(bool, int)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I've also tried variation of the following: g++ -o exec exec_mon_example.cpp -L /org/boost/lib -l \ boost_test_exec_monitor-gcc /opt/org/boost/lib/libboost_test_exec_monitor-gcc.so: undefined reference to `test_main(int, char**)' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Does this compile for other Linux users? boost::bind questions

Heya Boosters, I ran into a problem using boost::bind yesterday and, although I found a workaround, I've got a few questions. For the record I'm using boost 1.30. I stumbled onto the issue that boost::bind doesn't define the argument_type typedef (I was trying to use std::not1). After trawling the web I found a discussion, and useful workaround, about this here: http://tinyurl.com/5bl9m Questions that arose from this: o Why doesn't boost::bind support argument_type? o What other standard library function adapters does this affect? - Is it all that are derived from unary_function? o Has the operator! addition been incorporated into later versions of boost? - If not, why not? ublas aix test failures

Hello, I am interested in using ublas for a large government project. I noticed ublas (as of 8-19-2004) failed test3 on the visual age c++ compiler. What does this test exercise? I've been looking at the Preprocessor appendix from the "C++ Template Metaprogramming" book (can't wait!) and see three different approaches to vertical repetition: local, file and self; however, I'm not clean on how to express what I want using these approaches. Another lambda question

I am getting another compiler error when trying to use the lambda library. Current experiment is string extraction. I'm trying to create a lambda(x) that pushes any char passed to it onto a particular string. string s2; void (std::string::*ft)(char) = &std::string::push_back; // extract function pointer because push_back is overloaded char c = 'n'; bind<void>(ft, var(s2), _1, 1)(c); // should push one 'n' onto the string. However, it doesn't compile bind<void>(reinterpret_cast<char(std::string::*)(char)>(ft), var(s2), _1, 1)(c); // error messages made me think it might be because push_back returns void // I know this isn't good practice, but I'm just trying to figure out what's wrong // However, this won't compile either. boost::graph adding verticies and edges whilst performing a dfs

Greetings all , I have a quick question regarding the boost graph library and depth first search operations. I have a very large graph , which has a visitor attached to the depth_first_search routine. The Visitor may add in more verticies / Edges when visiting an existing vertex in the Graph. (NOTE :: All the added verticies / edges from the visitor are guaranteed to be higher in the graph structure! i.e. the DFS algorithm would not have processed them at time of insertion. ) My question is can the depth_first_search handle changes to the Graph whilst it is performing its operation ? From my observations of the colour map used I dont think this is possible with the core depth_first_search routine in the library , could someone confirm this , and if anyone has ideas on how this can be performed I would be most grateful to hear their thoughts !
