Howdy, I was searching for an intelligent assert facility with serveral debug levels, that asserts when it is run debug mode and throws in release mode. That is how i ran into Boost's SMART_ASSERT ( http://www.drdobbs.com/cpp/enhancing-assertions/184403745) However, I cannot find anything about it that was posted after 2003 nor can I find it on the Boost site. Does anyone know what happened to the project? Was is cancelled or did it make it into Boost under another name? Kind regards, Dano

[MSM] Parse error in Visual Studio 2012, not in Visual Studio 2013.

Hello, In the code below, VS 2012 (target v110) underlines the macro name BOOST_MSM_EUML_EVENT_WITH_ATTRIBUTES in the last line with a wavy red line. Hovering a mouse over it shows a tooltip with error report: "Error: not a class or struct name" And if I recall correctly, the code does not compile. The error disappears in VS 2013 (v120). Though in VS 2013 (target v120), if I remove line "namespace msm = boost::msm;", the last line triggers an error again. This time with a different tooltip error report: "Error: name followed by '::' must be a class or namespace name." Am I using MSM incorrectly? [python] Crash right after initialization after ubgrading from 1.48 to 1.54

Now I * downloaded the python 2.75 source * compiled python 2.75 * compiled boost 1.54 against python 2.75 * built our software against these new libs -> The behavior is still the same. ob_type of the first python object I create is 0xffffffff, and trying to access it results in an immediate crash. This only applies to the debug version. Release is fine. Also, the behavior is the same, if I link the boost debug build against python release or debug. Rgds Richard

[Iostreams] Problem to chain gzip filter with home-made one

Hello everybody, I meeting a execution issue while using the gzip filter of the Boost.Iostreams, combined with a buffered home-made one. I would like to know what is wrong in my way to do it. Firstly, my filter is a general DualFilter. It uses an buffer (of 16 bytes) before the transformation and the put/return. The categories of my filter is closable and dual_use. You can find code details in the end of this mail. My problem is ([a/b] means for the separates case with the letter a and b): If I take the 6 possibilities for write and read: 1) io::filtering_[i/o]stream stm; 2) stm.push(io::gzip_[de/]compressor()); 3) stm.push(my_[Unt/T]ransFilter); at the moment to use the stm.[get/put] to read/write 1)-2) works perfectly 1)-3) works perfectly 1)-3)-2) works perfectly 1)-2)-3) Stay stuck (obviously it is the one I really need) In fact in the last case, the gzip filter give this infinite loop to the put of the TransFilter : 31 -117 8 0 0 0 0 0 0 31 -117 8 0 0... A similar case occur with the bzip filter (even if it is a bit longer loop). What do I do wrong ? Somebody can help me ? BOOST ASIO: Having successful READ from the SERVER ..??

All, Initially after having done successful CONNECT with the server, sending successful LOGON message and finally KEEP ALIVE status, I tried to read from the server as - -- boost::asio::streambuf data; std::size_t length = boost::asio::read(socket, data, boost::asio::transfer_at_least(socket.available())); -- but was able to partially receive response from remote server which I don't think was completely successful, so to have COMPLETE RESPONSE from the server, tried with below modification - -- boost::system::error_code ec; boost::asio::streambuf data; std::size_t length = boost::asio::read(socket, data, boost::asio::transfer_all(), ec); --- but this modification doesn't work. Any clue what should be the proper way? Thanks!!

SIGSEGV when removing Ethernet/Serial Port cables

Have a boost enable application which communicated over USB serial ports and UDP If the cables are removed, the library fires off SIGSEGV signals. I am trying to catch exceptions but neither } catch (boost::system::system_error &e) { } catch (std::exception &e) { seems to work, and a SIGSEGV signal is sent when the port->get_io_service().reset(); statement is executed. How can I handle the problem, that the USB serial cable is removed? I know I can test for the existence of /dev/ttyUSBx in the file system or /sys/class/tty/ttyUSBx" I know I can write a SIGSEGV handler, but would like to know if there is any exception I can catch instead. Have the same problem when the Ethernet Cable is removed. I upgraded from boost 1.48 to .154 and I thought I was done after all the compiler errors and unit tests were ironed out. But now when I start our application, it terminates immediately. This only happens with the debug build. The release build is fine. I verified that it properly links to boost-python-vc100-mt-gyd-1_54.lib and python27_d.lib The python version (2.73) is still the same that we used with boost 1.48. I tracked it down to here: Py_Initialize(); m_mainModule = boost::python::import(__main__); <-- crash here With the debugger I found out that the string object is invalid. More specifically, ob_type is 0xffffffff. So I added this exception which always throws now: Py_Initialize(); const boost::pathon::str someRandomString("someRandomString"); if(reinterpret_cast<void*>(0xffffffff) == someRandomString.ptr()->ob_type) throw std::runtime_error("Python problem"); What could be going on here? [Asio] Compilation errors after switching to 1.55 b1

I am getting very weird error after moving from 1.54 to 1.55b1: 2>C:\devel\boost_1_55_0b1\boost/asio/detail/impl/socket_ops.ipp(2224): error C2653: 'Windows' : is not a class or namespace name (..\..\lib\hexine.cpp) and many more in that file, then: 2>C:\devel\boost_1_55_0b1\boost/asio/detail/buffer_sequence_adapter.hpp(36): error C2653: 'Windows' : is not a class or namespace name (..\..\lib\hexine.cpp) Than, many errors later: 2>C:\devel\boost_1_55_0b1\boost/asio/detail/winrt_async_manager.hpp(62): error C2039: 'IAsyncAction' : is not a member of 'Windows::Foundation' (..\..\lib\hexine.cpp) This looks like C++/CLI implementation. I assume this is related to "Implemented a limited port to Windows Runtime. This support requires that the language extensions be enabled." The project I've joined [ab]uses BOOST_NO_EXCEPTIONS in 1.55b as a means to intercept exceptions thrown via boost::throw_exception() and translate them to the project's single exception type derived from std::exception, leaving me a bit queasy. That queasiness is reinforced by #ifdef BOOST_NO_EXCEPTIONS #error This header requires exception handling to be enabled. #endif in ...\boost_1_55_0b1\boost\exception\detail\exception_ptr.hpp. This implies that BOOST_NO_EXCEPTIONS is used for more that just allowing client code to supply it's own throw_exception. Does boost and/or C++ provide a better customization point to safely translate exceptions thrown by boost? (note: we're using vs2013, generally the latest gcc, and clang) Thanks, Jeff

Boost Iterator Adaptor, with a mutable member variable is optimized out incorrectly

hello everyone, i am not sure if this is actually a question about boost usage. but in the attached code i'm stuck with the unlikely situation, that gcc optimizes away my code and produces garbage for -On (n>=1), while it works like intended with -O0. attached is the minimal code, with which i could reproduce the problem: on linux i686 g++ version 4.6.3 and x86_64 g++ version 4.7.2, using packaged boost_1_54_0 in both instances, i see the following: when i compile the code with optimization (-O1) % ./iterator_adaptor_weirdness -1219536795 -1219536795 and without (-O0) % ./iterator_adaptor_weirdness 4 2 is this a bug in gcc? is it wrong to use mutable variables in conjunction with iterator_adaptor? any insight is appreciated, jonas P.S.: I know, that this particular instance of the problem, might be better solved using a transform_iterator, but unfortunately that approach doesn't scale.

[Asio] Example of the "passing the buck" pattern

Hi all, Although the pattern of "passing the buck" has been mentioned in several places in the context of Boost.Asio, I didn't find any self-contained example that demonstrates it in a reusable manner. So, after going through all the information I could find, I tried to create such an example that demonstrates it using C++03.I would like to ask for feedback related to the attached sample code (its "Test Infrastructure" and "Test Code" sections) and double check that it does indeed depict what "passing the buck" means. For future reference I'm listing here the all the sources of information I could find related to the pattern of "passing the buck". it also turned out that a helper utility is needed in order to wrap boost::bind created handlers and have the wrapper integrate with the Asio customization points. - N3388 paper: Using Asio with C++11 http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/docs/papers/2012/n3388.pdf Chapter 7 describes this strategy to develop efficient and generic composed operations by letting their caller decide via the provided completion handler how the intermediary handlers should interact with the Asio customization points. - Thinking Asynchronously: Designing Applications with Boost.Asio https://github.com/boostcon/2011_presentations/raw/master/mon/thinking_asyn… The "Managing Complexity" chapter references the "pass the buck" strategy with slides 113 and 114 showing invocation and allocation hooks that call the hooks of a nested handler. - The implementation of higher level functions from Boost.Asio like async_read or async_write. The problem with them being an example of the pattern is that they are using custom classes for the intermediary operation handlers instead of relying on boost::bind to build them on the fly. - Asio Samples project http://sourceforge.net/projects/asio-samples For example its handler wrapper: context_alloc_handler and its usage in the echo server implementation. Preprocessor Recursion

I'm trying to create a 'C' macro that will define and initialize static data. For example: STATIC_CONST_STRUCT ( A, a, MEMBER_DATA(CONST_STR, a, "Hello, a") MEMBER_DATA(CONST_STR, b, "Hello, b") MEMBER_STRUCT ( C, c, MEMBER_DATA(CONST_STR, d, "Hello, d") MEMBER_DATA(CONST_INT, e, 1) ) ); Would cause the 'C' preprocessor to create: static const struct A { CONST_STR a; CONST_STR b; struct C { CONST_STR d; CONST_INT e; } c; } = {"Hello, a", "Hello, b", {"Hello, d", 1}}; If I could use C++, this would be easy, but I'm using 'C' and it would be very helpful to have the initialization along with the declaration. I can't quite figure out how to make this work. My macros stop expanding. I suspect the recursive nature of the problem having an arbitrarily deep nesting is why. If it helps, I do have a maximum depth for the nesting. I've tried reading the docs and learn more about recursion, but I can't seem to find a solution. I suspect I'm close. [geometry] Difference problem using boost geometry in 1.47

I am using boost geometry in 1.47 and am pretty happy with it. However, I am having a problem performing an intersection that I can't figure out how to solve. When I difference two geometries, I am sometimes left with a result that uses reverse winding to subtract a piece of the result rather than providing a "clean" polygon with winding in one direction only. I've posted an image here that demonstrates this: http://oi42.tinypic.com/2elfp0o.jpg I get the feeling that if I were to use the right models this might somehow be fixed? If not is there an algorithm that can clean up the result? MFC ASSERT in dllinit.cpp line 703 when using Boost.Log

Hi, I receive an assertion, when I try to use Boost.Log in one of my DLLs. I have a tools.dll, which contains my logging facility and I tried to implement to logging stuff with Boost.Log. This tools.dll is referenced by another helper.dll and both DLLs are used in the application. However, when I start the application, I get the famous ASSERT. This happens with Boost 1.54 and Boost.Log as well as with Boost 1.48 and Boost.Log 1.1. I've digged through lots of mailing lists and old postings today. What I understood so far, there's an issue with _pRawDllMain pointer in Boost.Thread, some suggested commenting it out in #include <boost/thread/detail/tss_hooks.hpp>, but this leads to memory leaks? This thread http://lists.boost.org/threads-devel/2009/06/0476.php said it would be fixed after 1.40, but I don't know, if this has been done. Dynamic linking to Boost as suggested here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5355931/adding-include-boost-thread-mute… did not help. Any hints, what I should check? Thanks Simon

Reading & Parsing an .ini input file using BOOST... ..!!

All, Need small help. I have an "input.ini" input file which contains sample values like – --- App=| 5000 | 5001 | 0 | | | | 1BYTE | --- Starting with word (viz. App), followed by equal sign, than data within pipes (|) and blank space between two pipes ( | | ). Anything only between two pipes is to be read. I am looking to parse this input file. After parsing, assign each data to struct member type and than send this complete struct as socket. I am looking to use Boost property tree (or the needed one) and finally the ASIO to send the complete filled struct as stream. Hello all, we use these macro's to be more portable, but are these 'official' Boost functionality? they are defined in <boost/detail/interlocked.hpp> which made me doubt. Ofc better to use atomics in future, bit no time for that right now.

http://www.boost.org/users/license.html says "Currently, some Boost libraries have their own licenses." Is this correct in stating that some Boost libraries don't use the Boost Software License? If so, what is an example of a Boost library that does not use the Boost Software License? Is there a definitive list of which libraries don't use the Boost Software License? I discussed this on the #boost irc channel today, and it was suggested that the license.html page is out of date, and that all of the Boost libraries have already been updated to use the Boost Software License. If this is indeed the case, can we please update the license.html page? Thanks

Mixing signals2 and asio mechanism failing

I've the following: <1> a single instance of io_service object with a program life-time and several threads calling it's run() method. io_service::work is given to it so that it never terminates (unless we stop it). <2> class A which has boost::signals2::signal connecting functions for callback. * async operations (eg., async_read_until, async_write etc) <3> class B which is derived from std::shared_from_this ; * has a composition of class A as std::unique_ptr which is instantiated in B's constructor ; <c> has functions/listeners which are registered with signals of class A (eg., signals2::connection connectionObj = uniqPtrA->someSig.connect([=]{shared_from_this_ptrB->listenerFuncOfB();}); <4> Another thread outside the thread-pool of <1> above which instantiates (and manages) class B: auto ptrB = std::make_shared(); //and further operations. The problem is when I need to destroy ptrB I can't. For instance, i call some method of class B on ptrB to clear all connections it has with class A and allow ptrB to go out of scope, but class B destructor is never called: {//local scope auto ptrB = std::make_shared(); ptrB->connectListenersToA(); /* eg auto self = shared_from_this(); connectionObj = uniqPtrA->someSig.connect([=]{self ->listenerFuncOfB();}); referring to <3> above */ //... do some operations ptrB->disconnectListenersWithA(); //eg connectionObj.disconnect(); referring to <3> above }//Scope ends I want ptrB to destroy the underlying pointer. The ptrB destructor is never called because signals2::connection::disconnect does not seem to wipe out the given slot so the shared_ptr reference of B remains with the signal in class A as anonymous functor (due to lambda in <3> above) containing it does not get destroyed.
