I build boost 1.54.0 this way (Windows 8 with Visual Studio 2012 x64): b2 address-model=64 toolset=msvc-11.0 --build-type=complete stage --with-filesystem --with-signals --with-system \bootstrap.bat I expect to get a file named 'libboost_filesystem-vc110-mt-gd-1_54.lib' (some boost header file is linking this file via #pragma ...) Unfortunately I get only a 'boost_filesystem-vc110-mt-gd-1_54.lib' and a 'libboost_filesystem-vc110-mt-sgd-1_54.lib' Any idea what I am doing wrong? Best regards, Julian

[AFIO] AFIO Proposed Feature Voting Announcement

Hello Boost-dev and Boost-users, I’m Paul Kirth, and I am the student working on the upcoming AFIO library this summer as part of GSoC. As of last week AFIO is fully ported to Boost and is now building cleanly on all of the last three major releases of the three most popular C++ compilers. Niall Douglas, my mentor for AFIO, has previously mentioned on the list that we would be asking for your feedback regarding which new features would be most beneficial to the Boost community. We would like to accommodate you all, but with GSoC being limited in time and ending in just one month’s time now, we’re going to limit the current additions to the top 3 most requested features. I plan to stay involved with AFIO for as long as I am able, so I’m sure many more of these features can be supported by AFIO in the future. [math] Solving quadratic, cubic & quartic functions

I've run into an eigenvalue problem where I need to compute the roots of a cubic polynomial. This is a straight-forward problem to solve analytically, but I want to avoid reinventing the wheel if possible. The boost::math doc mentions some root-finding functions, but they all seem to be iterative - which should not be neccesary in my case. Can anyone tell me if boost includes any functions for analytically computing the roots of quadratic, cubic and possibly quartic polynomials? Thanks in advance, Fredrik Orderud

Hi, Consider the following task: Given a -) pointer to a function, and -) an iterator range with elements of type void *, the function-ptr shall be called with all the elements in the range as arguments. So conceptionally something like this: template <typename Func, typename Iter> void make_call(Func, Iter begin, Iter end) { int n = std::distance(begin, end); (*Func) (*(begin), *(begin + 1), *(begin + 2), ..., *(begin + n - 1)) } The interface (function declaration) here is +- what I want, the implementation shown of course is dummy-code not working. Does boost provide a more or less easy way to get this implementation smoothly done? C++ is 2003 version, so code must be compatible with e.g. VS 2008.. Note that I would know in principle a way how to do implement it myself, which involves the creation of a separate class for each number of arguments, but that's precisely what I want to avoid and I hope that wheel has already been invented in some boost-library :) thanks and regards, Thomas

Boost::MPI Enum Bug

Hi All, I am writing some software which is using boost::mpi. I think I have run into a slight bug (or at least a limitation) with the library. It is very similar to this question on S/O: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8127442/sending-complex-data-with-skelet… I am sending/receiving a class which has an enum member variable. Using normal send and receive was working fine but then I tried to use the skeleton/content mechanism and now my program failed with a segfault on calling `communicator::isend` with the content. While compiling, the compiler issued a warning about an uninitizialized variable: /home/dan/boost_1_54_0/boost/archive/detail/iserializer.hpp:539:9: warning: ‘i’ may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wuninitialized] I looked and noticed this was a function for handling enum values so I commented out the enum variable from my serialization member function and then the sending worked as expected. It looks like the same cause (using addresses of temporaries) as in the S/O question. If anyone is interested I have written a small example exhibiting this issue. I have a couple of questions regarding this: * Is it possible to get around this limitation/bug?^ * Is boost::mpi still being actively developed? I've found a few discussions about this but none really lead anywhere. Hi, I am trying to cross-compile from linux 64 bits to windows 64 bits. I am using fedora 19 with -std=c++11 and boost 1.53.0 that comes with fedora. The compiler is x86_64-w64-mingw32-g++. Michael, It sounds to me like you're making this altogether too complicated. Don't focus on the software; focus on the science. The size of the "degree" unit is the same for Kelvin and Celsius. (I.e., if the temperature changes by 1 degree K, it changes by exactly 1 degree C.) The only this that is different between Kelvin and Celsius is the zero point. For Kelvin, 0 degrees is absolute zero and there are no negative values of temperature. (Well, that's not quite right, but you'll never encounter the exceptions.) For Celsius, 0 degrees is the freezing point of water at sea level. To convert between Kelvin and Celcius, just add or subtract a constant. That constant has a value of 273.15. That is, you can make a dimensionally-safe conversion from Kelvin to Celcius by subtracting 273.15. Converting from Celsius to Kelvin by adding 273.15. Cheers, Rick Aurbach Aurbach & Associates, Inc. I have a project which has a handy stream filter in the formatter which indents newlines in logged messages to some depth à la: I/O [- 2 +] <loadedData> { <s> <p> <o> . <s> <p> <o2> . } </loadedData> (No, I'm not using an XML decorator above, though perhaps I should be.) I've maintained this for several generations of boost::log, e.g. #if (BOOST_VERSION > 104600) // could use (BOOST_LOG_COMPATIBILITY == "1.46") if cpp compared strings sink->set_formatter(&LineIndenter); #else backend->set_formatter(&LineIndenter); #endif but now that boost::log's released (1000s of thanks!!!), I'd like to switch to a channel_severity_filter. I had a custom formatter before in order to fiddle with the rec.message: inline void LineIndenter (std::ostream& strm, logging::record const& rec) { std::stringstream ss; oprfxnstream prfxstr(ss.rdbuf(), depth, ' '); ... stuff with attrs prfxstr << rec.message(); strm << ss.str(); } That member seems to be gone from logging::record and besides, it'd be nicer to use something like: boost::log::add_console_log (std::clog, boost::log::keywords::filter = min_severity || severity >= critical, boost::log::keywords::format = (boost::log::expressions::stream << line_id << ": <" << severity << "> [" << channel << "] " << lineIndenter(boost::log::expressions::smessage) ) ); I haven't figured out the signature for lineIndenter. graph theoretical problem

Dear All, does the boost graph library provide a solution to the problem I'm trying to solve: I want to distribute a set of tasks to multiple CPUs/Threads. The tasks have predecessor and successor dependencies. There are no loops. More often than not, a task consists of only very few operations. So if I brute force program this, the resulting code is busy only with scheduling -- the real code does not show up in the profiling results. I think this can be solved by collapsing some tasks into a single task to minimize scheduling/communication. I've got a cost function associated with every task. Is this some well known algorithm which is already available in boost graph? Kind Regards Peter Foelsche

[bgl] adding nodes recursively

Hello all: I have a game with multiple rooms, which I would like to map to a graph. Given this, I have a couple of questions. One of my goals is to separate each individual area and have it on it's own graph, then connect the graphs. Is this a possibility? I remember reading about connected graphs for my data structures class, but we didn't get to far with them. My second issue is I will have a vector of rooms, which all have exits. Each individual room will be a vertex with the exits being the edges. I can recursively add all the exits that a room points to, then come back and add the rest of the exits. But there may be two exits pointing to the same room. Is there a quick way that I could insure that rather than creating a new vertex, I could just point the edge to the preexisting vertex? Finally, i have one other question. I plan to create resources based on a bunch of different factors. Basically I need a way to determine the closest resources and perhaps get the shortest path to them, or the weight of all of the edges that would point to the n closest resources that were spawned. Hi List, I have to provide digital signatures of serialized C++ objects, I'm planing on using Boost::Serialization for the XML part. Since XML signatures and XMLDsig in particular are difficult [1] and littered with pitfalls I was wondering if maybe the XML output of Boost::Serialization is stable enough to do a plain byte-oriented PKCSwhatever signature? To summarize: - C++ objects are serialized to XML with Boost::Serialization (XML is used since date has to be as human readable as possible). - Serialized XML has to be digitally signed. - XMLDsig is complicated [1] Question: Does Boost::Serialization with the XML backend produce bytewise the same data every time? [msm] exit points & favor compile time policy

Hi, I faced to a strange problem. I'm working with root fsm & child fsm. Child fsm has an exit point called "End". I use vs2012u3, boost 1.54 transition table from root looks like that: struct Waiting : state<> {}; // Child is typedef for back-end struct transition_table : public boost::mpl::vector< ... Row < Waiting, begin, Child >, Row < Child::exit_pt<Child::End>, none, Waiting >, ... > {}; So, when I use F-C-T- policy, the Child fsm is stuck in Child::End state, the root fsm never moves to Waiting again. It doesn't happen with default policy. I noticed, that there is a note in msm's changelog From V2.24 to V2.25 (Boost 1.54) • Bugfix: Exit points broken for the favor_compile_time policy. looks similar to my case. Christophe, can you check that bugfix?

Result: Only the last regex condition matches. So I have a few questions: 1. Is u32regex + make_u32regex the *only* way to get my regex condition matched? 2. [System]

Hey all, I've been looking over the Boost System library with an eye to making use of the system error codes functionality. Specifically, I want to use it to turn error codes returned by unix system calls like socket, accept, listen etc. into thrown exceptions. However, from the documentation I can't understand how I'm supposed to do this. Anybody know, or have good clear example code to share? Thanks, -- Geoff Nothing is ever easy.

Boost.Asio, 0MQ, and Windows

I have been following the excellent advice on using 0MQ and Boost.Asio on a POSIX-ish platform (MacOS) at <http://preview.tinyurl.com/jw4krek>. Unfortunately, though, I am writing code which needs to work on both POSIX-ish and Windows. I'm not having much luck, so far, with my attempts to translate this advice to the Windows side. I can't seem to figure out how to match the type returned by getsockopt(ZMQ_FD) on Windows and what I think should be the Windows equivalents of boost::asio::posix::stream_descriptor. Here is what I've tried: zmq::context_t zenv(1); zmq::socket_t zocket(zenv, ZMQ_PUSH); SOCKET zfd; std::size_t zfd_size = sizeof(zfd); zocket.getsockopt(ZMQ_FD, &zfd, &zfd_size); boost::asio::io_service ios; boost::asio::windows::stream_handle io(ios, zfd); And the error I get when I try to compile it. 2>Z:\zee-zmq-socket.cpp(14): error C2664: \ 'boost::asio::windows::basic_stream_handle<>::basic_stream_handle(\ boost::asio::io_service &,void *const &)' : cannot convert parameter \ 2 from 'SOCKET' to 'void *const &' 2> Reason: cannot convert from 'SOCKET' to 'void *const ' 2> Conversion from integral type to pointer type requires \ reinterpret_cast, C-style cast or function-style cast So far, my Google-fu has been weak; I can only seem to find examples which deal with Boost.Asio and 0MQ on POSIX-ish. I'm not sure what I need to do to correctly get from a SOCKET to a `void * const`. And this advice also makes me nervous that my compilation problems are only the tip of a much nastier iceberg hiding under the surface. Iostreams with two filters throws exception

I've been attempting to use Boost.Iostreams with two filters to compress + encrypt ("out") and decrypt + uncompress ("in"). This works for some files, while others throw an exception during the "in" phase. If I remove either of the filters for out/in (e.g. remove the compress or the encrypt) everything works fine -- the issue only occurs with two filters chained. >From what I understand in the documentation, this should be supported, but I must be missing something. To elaborate on Ion's remarks, ALL virtual memory in user space in windows is backed by the page file, and ALL file I/O is memory mapped, the only difference being virtual memory is backed by the page file rather than a specific named file in the file system. Your inter process memory is just as likely to be in physical memory as any other data. So most likely this is not the cause of your performance issue, unless memory is so tight that your entire process working set is continually thrashing. [zlib] Compression intended use

Hello, This is probably out of scope with boost's intended usage pattern, but I'll ask anyhow. I've got a package of output files that I want to bundle, tarball, gzip, or however I can manage to compress them. I see there is the zlib usage, but methinks that is more for in-memory compression. Not sure exactly how that translates to folders-/files-oriented compression I am thinking of. Thank you... Regards, Michael Powell
